Mickey Mouse is not only the iconic face of the Walt Disney empire but also a beloved character recognized by all for nearly 100 years. He made his on-screen debut today in history, on November 18, 1928, in the animated short titled Steamboat Willie.

Mickey Mouse is often recognized as the first major character for the Disney company; however, many people may not know that Walt Disney had created another animated character before him. That character was Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, which was Walt Disney’s first creation. Unfortunately, he lost the rights to Oswald due to a contract dispute with his distributor.
On his train ride home after losing Oswald, Walt brainstormed ideas for a new and improved character. By the time he arrived home, he introduced the concept of “Mortimer Mouse” to his wife, who suggested renaming him “Mickey.”
Mickey Mouse was quickly embraced by audiences who were struggling during the Great Depression. He became a symbol of hope and escapism for a nation seeking comfort. For Walt Disney, the character of Mickey Mouse represented his journey from humble beginnings and early losses to achieving great success through hard work and ingenuity. Walt considered Mickey Mouse to be his greatest triumph.
New Technology
Mickey Mouse made his debut in the animated short Steamboat Willie, which also marked significant milestones for animation. This short featured revolutionary technology by synchronizing sound effects and music with the on-screen action. The method used involved recording sound on the same strip of film as the video. Although this technique was not invented by Walt Disney or first used in Steamboat Willie, Disney refined it, and the short became known for its successful implementation of synchronized sound.
Steamboat Willie was set apart from the far more common silent animations, and it paved the way for Disney’s future full-length animated films.
