On February 16, 1935, Salvatore Phillip “Sonny” Bono was born in Detroit, Michigan. Bono has worn many hats throughout his life—he was a singer, songwriter, actor, and politician. From his rise to stardom as one half of the musical duo Sonny & Cher to his impactful career in public service, Bono left a lasting legacy across entertainment and politics.

Bono’s early years in Los Angeles, following his family’s move during his childhood, were marked by his unwavering determination to succeed in the music industry. He worked odd jobs, wrote songs, and honed his craft in a relentless pursuit of his passion. His perseverance paid off when he began collaborating with the legendary producer Phil Spector in the early 1960s, gaining invaluable experience in music production.

During this time, Bono met Cherilyn Sarkisian, later known as Cher. The two formed a personal and professional partnership to skyrocket them to fame. Sonny & Cher, often seen as a unit, rose to fame with their 1965 hit, “I Got You Babe.” This influential song, which became an anthem of the counterculture movement, showcased the duo’s ability to connect with their audience and solidified their status as one of the most iconic musical acts of the 1960s. Their dynamic chemistry, Sonny’s upbeat songwriting, and Cher’s powerhouse vocals earned them a devoted fan base.

Beyond music, the pair starred in The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour during the 1970s. The show showcased their comedic banter and musical performances, further cementing their status as household names. Although their marriage ended in 1975, their professional achievements together left an indelible mark on pop culture, and they are still commonly referred to as a powerhouse duo today.

In the 1980s, Bono transitioned from music into politics. Frustrated by bureaucratic hurdles he encountered while trying to open a restaurant in Palm Springs, California, he decided to run for office and eventually became the mayor of Palm Springs in 1988. He served for four years and revitalized the city’s image.

Bono’s political career continued when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Republican in 1994. As a congressman, he focused on issues like copyright reform and environmental preservation. His ability to connect with people made him a beloved figure among constituents.

Bono, at 62 years old, tragically died in a skiing accident in California on January 5, 1998. His death was mourned by fans, colleagues, and friends around the world, including Cher, who delivered an emotional eulogy at his funeral.
