On this day in history, November 4, 2001, large crowds gathered outside a theater in London, eager to catch a glimpse of the actors cast in the movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The film was scheduled to be released to the public just a few weeks later, and the excitement surrounding the movie, its characters, and the immensely popular book series being brought to life was nothing short of magical.

An Unprecedented Book Craze

While the movie franchise was highly anticipated, the cultural phenomenon surrounding the book series was truly unprecedented.

In June 1997, the first Harry Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, was published by Bloomsbury Publishing, with an initial print run of just 500 copies. Twelve publishing houses had already rejected the book, and sales projections were not particularly optimistic. In early 1998, the book was released in the United States.

The book received immediate critical acclaim, generating initial buzz around the story. By 1999, all three of the first books in the series had made it onto the New York Times Bestseller list, and the series’s popularity began to spread internationally. By 2000, the Harry Potter phenomenon was in full swing. The series exploded in popularity, selling hundreds of millions of copies worldwide, being translated into over 85 languages, and resulting in extensive merchandise. By the time the 4th novel was released in 2000, lines of fans formed at bookstores to await its release.

The popularity of the book series set the stage for the movie franchise to be equally explosive.

The Premiere

The world premiere of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone took place on the evening of November 4, 2001, at the Odeon Leicester Square Theater. The red carpet event featured numerous celebrities, including the young cast members Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. Thousands of fans gathered outside the theater, which was decorated to resemble Hogwarts Castle, hoping to catch a glimpse of the stars who would portray their favorite characters.

Theater Release

The film premiered to the public on November 16, 2001, in over 3,000 theaters across the UK and the United States, marking the widest theatrical release at that time. It grossed $974 million worldwide, making it the year’s highest-grossing film. The Harry Potter film franchise began with its first movie and later produced seven more films to adapt the entire book series. Together, these films earned over $9.5 billion worldwide. Although the eighth movie was released in 2011, the series remains one of the most beloved movie franchises of all time.
