The German silent horror film, The Student of Prague, was first released in 1913 and later remade in 1926, 1935, and 2004. This film was BBC's first feature film airing in a 1938 broadcast on August 14th. The horror film directed by Arthur Robison stars Theodor Loos, Dorothea Wieck, and Anton Walbrook.

Film Synopsis

In the 1860s, Balduin was a popular, handsome student in Prague and the best fencer in town. The film depicts Balduin as affectionate towards Lydia, the innkeeper's niece, but with a friendly rivalry with Dahl, his close friend who was also eyeing Lydia. But the film soon takes a twist after Balduin meets the charming Julia Stella.

Just as Balduin falls for Lydia, the innkeeper's niece, his life unravels after encountering the opera singer Julia Stella. He is quickly infatuated, but Julia already has a keeper, the wealthy baron, Waldis.

Being a poor student, he feels he doesn't stand a chance competing against the likes of Waldis. As fate would have it, Dr. Carpis, a mysterious character jealous of the baron, steps into the scene. Using his sorcery, he helps propose a deal with Balduin to help him get financial success and Julia's affections.

But the deal comes at a heavy price when Balduin has to trade his mirror shadow in return for the favor. His life soon sinks into terror and madness as his reflection haunts him. This terrific pioneering movie is full of light-hearted glee and shadowy dread and is a worthy watch for film lovers.
