Lou and the Yankees faced Earl Whitehill for nine innings and relief pitcher Tommy Bridges for two innings. Detroit won a close game, with Bridges being credited with the win in the eleventh inning. The final score was 5 to 4 over the Yankees.

Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth and the rest of the top of the batting order that day went hitless to the tune of 0 for 19 at-bats, with three strikeouts and two bases on balls. Lou, a first baseman, did not have any errors during the game. Even though the Yankees were strong defensively, they could only produce four runs with nine hits in 11 innings. The Yankees were defeated in the eleventh inning with an RBI from Charlie Gehringer, which topped the Tigers at five runs with 14 hits.

Lou Gehrig would later go on in 1931 to finish second in the Most Valuable Player voting to Lefty Grove of the Philadelphia Athletics. Despite their best efforts, Lou Gehrig and the New York Yankees would finish second to Philadelphia in the America League Pennant and not compete for the World Series.
