1997 Diana, Princess of Wales, dies in a car crash in a road tunnel in Paris

The death of Princess Diana of Wales, on August 31, 1997, sent shockwaves around the globe. The beloved princess was well known for her charitable causes and kind way with the less fortunate. She was 36 years old.

On the night of her death, Diana was with her then-beau, Dodi Fayed, traveling by car through the narrow Paris streets. The driver, Henri Paul, was driving fast, estimated to be going twice the legal speed limit. He was also later found to have both alcohol and prescription drugs in his system. When they reached the Pont de L’Alma tunnel, Paul lost control of the vehicle at the entrance, causing the car to strike the wall on the right side, then swerving to the left side of the two lanes and colliding with a pillar.

Pulling up behind the crash were paparazzi photographers who had been following Diana that evening. Some tried to help while others took pictures.

Henri Paul and Dodi Fayed were both pronounced dead at the scene. Diana was still conscious and was taken by ambulance from the wreckage to Pitié-Salpêtrière University Hospital.

Diana’s injuries, while not obvious, were extensive, including damage to her heart which ultimately led to her death.

The only survivor was Trevor Rees-Jones, Dian’s bodyguard. He was the only one wearing a seatbelt.

After the investigation in 2008, it was determined that Diana had been unlawfully killed and ultimately blamed Paul for his negligent driving and the paparazzi who were chasing the car.
